I'm obviously all for free-speech. However I set up the media gallery to allow users to upload pics, movies and such. Let's use it rather than fill up the forums with pictures. Also the IMG tag allows folks to have pics from servers external to this site, that makes for broken links eventually.
I'm going to turn off the IMG tag, please use the media gallery from now on.

I thought about a thread like this myself actually, but then I though most of the members would like to keep their identity a secret...
But I like the look of thoses ESL students, maybe I can get me some Japanese girls over :D

Obviously I have no say in the matter, but having moderated for over a year on another board that has extensive galleries and allows members to post relevant pics in the thread, all at no noticeable slowing of the board or crowding of the bandwidth, I have to say this is an unwelcome new change, IMHO. Why can't we occasionally drop in a pic? Pic in the thread often save a long description . .and it's cool if something special happens, like a huge storm, and you have your pics . .pleeeze re-think allowing reasonable sized pics in the topic - otherwise my new topic - "Your Mug Shots" loses its kick - is there a good reason for spoiling this bit of fun?
graphic cheers!

Here's my reasons for not allowing the IMG tag:
Since the URL is external it can make ugly broken links when the pic disappears or the URL breaks
Causes leeching of images from 3rd party sites. This is not nice to steal images from someone's site without permission and will get either broken links or other webmasters contacting me.
Allowing Visitors to use IMG allows these and other potential abuses.
Now here's what I'm going to do - in fact what I've already done - I will allow members to attach pics to their posts. It will display the images inline to the post. In this way it will look like the person has used the IMG tag, but the pic will be on my site and the potential for broken links or leeched images will be gone. This will be another incentive/benefit for members over visitors and will allow the 'harmless fun' to be in the hands of proven, responsible members.
The media gallery will still be the primary media repository.
How's that for a compromise?

Sorry, that makes almost no sense . . as I say - if you care to check over at "my" site (i'm just staff there)PM me for the addy , you'll see that the things you fear almost never happen, and the members are free to post their various pics when and where they please. I am a pic kinda guy, and if I can't have some small fraction of the fun I have elsewhere . . well, no hard feelings.
Free speech, eh? Awfully tight . .
 Disappointed cheers.

Makes perfect sense to me, see responsible people, like me, that are members  and not visitors, like yourself can use images in the post that are stored on this server, thus not using any other servers bandwidth! Seems like a good idea, that way only the more responsible, accepted people can put up images in a thread...
Like so...I think

I think you might have a really excellent group of users at your site. I have 8 domains running right now and on many of them the IMG tag encourages people to link to images from sites that don't know their images are being leeched in this way. Responsible users will use photobucket or an equivilent, however many will link pics direct from other forums and closed sites.
I've had irate webmasters contact me, asking me to remove posts or links. Sometimes the webmasters play tricks with Apache and instead of the pic expected we get a "you are a leeching bastard" graphic. Neither of which is any good for me.
I don't mean to ruin your fun and I am *NOT* interfering in your free speech. You may place a hard link to the pic in the post or you may upload to the media gallery. Once you are a member you may upload and attach a pic to your post and it will display inline to the post and not as a link. In this fashion all graphics will come from my site and I will not be responsible for leeching from external sites illegally and all graphics will display properly without broken links.
I think I'm being quite accomodating and am still allowing you to link or upload to any type of graphic, I'm just elliminating a potential problem early.
Does anyone else have problems with this?

=BB= sent me a PM, he's not going to show up as much here and he's not going to advertise/recommend this site to anyone because he feels I 'ruined' his fun.
I do understand that sharing pics is fun and a good thing. I just don't want anyone leeching illegally and it coming back to roost here. =BB= used photobucket and seems like a good guy, I hate to lose an intelligent person like him but I must protect the site for ALL users.
I am sorry. and I'm really *NOT* taking away freespeech -- you have the ability to share the pics, just not as an inline IMG.
Sorry for any grief --just trying to be fair to all concerned. Am I being unreasonable?

It's your site dude , you call the shot's .
I don't have a problem with avatars or inline picks.
It ain't really affected anything that has gone on before , it's a disscussion forum, i really don't give a monkey's about avatars and such.
=BB= is a good guy , but coming from the site he has, this site would be a little "restrictive" in it's approach.
It's not something that would bother me ....

Alright --- I'll restore IMG access and give it a try again with this one caveat .... If I start getting complaints from irate webmasters or start getting "Leeching Bastard" images on the site then I will have to do one of two things:
Either I will restrict IMG access for ALL users again
Or I will give enough negative reputation to the person who uploads leeched pictures and causes the problem to knock them down a rank or put them on probation.
=BB= is right about the uploading of pictures being a good thing. I just have a sour taste from both being leeched and from other users uploading leeched pics to me. But I'm willing to wait until an actual problem surfaces on this board.
That's about as fair as I can be. We'll just wait and see what happens.

Thanks Daremo :), sorry to be a pain in the butt about the IMG in thread biz, but like I said in what should have remained a PM, the problem you describe does not adversely affect my regular board at all . . please visit and see for yourself.
Of course my personal pics are stored online, and usually the stuff I use from other sources is from a secondary source like google, so the "leeching" problem does not surface. And hey, if a link disappears or turns sour, that's all that happens . . no biggie at all.
I really do appreciate you bringing back the IMG in thread deal . . and if anyone wants to post things the "safe" way like I do, I am more than happy to hook you up with the technique. It is super easy.
Here is another "mug-shot" from my vault:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v451/bigbenjamin/14hmvbgmbb.jpg
Of course this is me and some of the posse visiting with The Trailer Park Boys at the April 2005 HMV autograph party. If you haven't seen TPB yet, you probably will . .it is available in Ireland, England, Canada and maybe the U.S. of A. in some censored form. Their big movie comes out this time next year. Keepin it real! nomesaaaaaayin?
Big Cheers:D!

Heh... when I got hit I was out on my feet for about 30 seconds. The people who were there tell me I was staggaring and waving him off like a drunk at the bar who has had enough.
I didn't fall though. His heel hit me directly on the bone beneath the eye socket, he limped for a week after that.
