View Full Version : Save the whales

There are now 3 blue whale carcasses that have drifted ashore on the west coast. Please consider the following:

This is coincidental with the US Navy testing the “Super-Sonar” in this area.
At least one whale suffered blunt trauma.

Collisions between whales and vessels of any size along the migration path are rare

No ship in the area has reported a collision

A blast of Super-Sonar could cause the loss of natural sonar in a healthy whale

Similar to a person being deafened by a loud noise or being blinded by a bright flash
The loss could be permanent or temporary depending upon strength and duration of exposure

Blunt trauma is consistent with the loss of natural sonar in a whale

They are essentially blind and deaf with no sonar
Could panic and collide with ships or natural formations at high speed causing massive injuries

At least one blue whale was decapitated

Since the ‘neck’ of a blue whale is almost the thickest part, what could decapitate it?
The bodies were not unduly savaged by sharks, therefore decapitation by predators is highly unlikely

How probable is the following scenario?:

US Navy deliberately tested Super-Sonar on a small pod
The Super-Sonar adversely affected the pod
The Navy harvested the head to determine what the Super-Sonar did to the whale

I feel that further investigation by 3rd parties is advisable.
Ok - what do you think? Is this another industrial/military screw-up? what is going on. Getting 3 whales dead, one decapitated, all at the same time is really kind of odd.

Dont tell me, George Bush has identified whales, in particular killer whales as a threat to the US, no doubt they ( the killer whales) are working on weapons of mass destruction ( the dreaded plankton bomb!) and must be destroyed.
My bet is that the FBI has had these whales under survleance for some time and concluded that they are in concert with Osama.

Proof:
If the whales are innocent then they have nothing to fear.
If the whales are guilty, then they will be hunted down to the death.
The innocent whales will show their innocence by helping in the fight against the war on terror, non co-operative whales are dead mo- feckers :-)

Dude, with all due respect, have you ever tried to stick a whale in your gas tank ?
No, I thought so !

I can't imagine how a blue whale would "naturally" become decapitated.
Is that even possible? Even with ravaging via sharks? Would they even bother with the neck if there are choicer portions? Do sharks even eat whales?

I certainly think getting the head from a whale would be an endeavor for humans. Even then, consider the tools required to flense that much meat!

I just now reading about this so I'm a bit late to the game but something doesn't sound right here, has anything else come of it?

It would take a lot to decapitate a blue whale.

Killer whales, and I would presume sharks, would go for the tongue, biggest reward for minimum effort. They normally eat in from the outside. I have never heard of killer whales going after adult whales though. Calves yes, they jump on their backs and drown them, but adults are a different kettle of fish ;)

I would definately try stuffing a whale into my tank if it was cheaper than buying diesel at the moment.

Save the whales - shoot a fisherman!

I reckon the CIA did it. Black helicopters, cattle mutilations, decapitated whales - it all fits.

Interestingly enough the state of California and the U.S. Navy have declared "sonar-free" zones off the California coast to protect whales.

pretty much obvious that thats right

its not like your just gna find a blue whale decapitated by a predator

plus wales have blubber, oil running low, economy on a downer

it could be a return to whaling!

Interestingly enough the state of California and the U.S. Navy have declared "sonar-free" zones off the California coast to protect whales.

Prez Bush has other ideas: story (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/01/17/bush_sonar_whales_dolphins_judge_overrule/)

Also how large are these "sonar-free" zones? Sonar can travel for miles, it's thought that whales can communicate over the horizon (although at sea level the horizon is quite close)
