Well pleae remember that AMD is totally dependent upon Intel. AMD licenses all their technology from Intel. All they do is tweak it and put it in their own packages. Granted they have made it slightly faster and cheaper, but at its core - it's still Intel. AMD has added nothing new or revelutionary, all they do is license so they can build their own.

i know all that stuff but as you say they tweak it so is that better? or just the same but differnt lable?

ok so let me put this straight

do you guys prefer say.....a $300 AMD chip or a $300 intel?

You learn something new everyday!
I never knew that ....

Me I use AMD, but I am not at the cutting edge, just looking for a fast box and $ for $ AMD does that much cheaper.

i agree on that i do think that for a cheap to mid range budget AMD is the bees knees but for higher end use i think intel have it nailed :)

anyone agree? :)

OK here's the real difference....

AMD has to license it's technology because they intend to create chips based on Intel's patent.

AMD has been more agile than Intel in that over the last 7 years they have created dual FSB's, used DDR memory instead of RDR memory on their motherboards and other speed improvements which Intel has countered by playing 'catch-up' to AMD's lead in the speed market.

Short answer - AMD is faster - about 25% - and cheaper than Intel. However it comes at a price. AMD reduces some cache sizes and actually has removed some features that Intel has to reduce size and gain efficiency. I have seen some very specific applications that will fail or produce erronious results on an AMD chip, however that is very rare. For current commercial applications, there is no difference when running AMD or Intel. Some specific games may come, out-of-the-box with a bias toward AMD or Intel as a marketing ploy with one company's motherboard or new chip.

AMD now refuses to give a MHz or GHz rating for their chips as they have a lower rating than Intel that they believe is made up for by their tweaks.
