View Full Version : Coroner: Mayor-elect's death was suicide

Has anyone here ever heard of a suicide who shot themselves in the chest? According to the coroner in a mostly white town in Lousianna, that's exactly what the new (black) mayor did just days before he was to take office. The man won by a landslide (68% of the vote) and was scheduled to take office within the next few days. His body was found in the parking lot of what the article calls a "former high school*" shot once in the chest, with a pistol nearby.

*Side note - just what does the article mean by "former high school?" Is it a school the man used to attend, or was it an abandoned school?

Back to the story -- the family does not accept the coroner's ruling (no kidding!) and is asking the state police to step in and investigate. (Although I'm certain that by now any clues at the crime scene are long gone.)

This would have been outrageous in any day and age but what was that coroner thinking? "Hmmmm, that black boy went and got his self eelected in my nice white town - sounds like a death wish to me..."

Aargh! I get so angry over stupidity like this. Anyway, here's the link to the whole story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070102/ap_on_re_us/mayor_dead

Give it a read and chime in with your thoughts.

It's pretty scary that this type of thing still goes on.
Can't the family not go to the feds ?

Can't the family not go to the feds ?I wondered that myself. Actually I thought the feds would get involved as soon as the article hit the papers without having to be called in. Maybe it's like the military where you have to go through a chain of command; local to state then finally to the feds.
