That's right - the city of Chicago has banned the sale of foie gras in restaurants. Now, this doesn't affect me personally because I dont' like the stuff AND I don't live in Chicago (thank God), but it's still a load of bullshit. The politicians gave in to PETA and their obnoxious behavior and are trying to control what people eat. I'm picturing Chicago during the prohibition era, corrupt politicians, police on the take... can't you see it? Police commisioner receiving foie gras smuggled out the back door so that he can ensure the restaurant owner that his place won't be raided...

What a bunch of crap. I really wish the politicians would take their heads out of their asses. Here's the link to the whole sad story.

The force feeding of birds is banned in 12 countries worldwide ( including Ireland) and two US states, make that three !

I don't have a problem with people eating meat, or meat products, I do have a problem with people inflicting suffering on an animal so they can enjoy an expensive morsal, there are millions of different types of dishes which do not involve the deliberate infliction of pain on an animal.
It's not like the rich bastards are goin to starve or anything !!!

Ahhhhh....Now we reach the real source of the whole issue. DISALLOW UNNEEDED CRUELTY TO ANY LIVING BEING.

However, PETA (Please see my massive rant about them earlier on these forums) in their deluded state could not get laws regarding force-feeding established so they chose to penalize restaurant owners and patrons.

All this does is give them ammo to attack all animal-based foods and does not address the basic issue.

This forces certain restaurants to not serve a high-profit meal to a willing patron.

It does not address the sale in grocery stores
It does not address Inet purchases
It does not address imports
It does not address cruelty to animals
It does not address force-feeding

All it addresses is the serving of the dish in restaurants.

This is nothing more than a publicity stunt by PETA

I would agree that PETA are acting against the reduction in animal cruelty, by their tactics they cause people to move away from their desired aim.

In the same way that a muslim fundamentalist is for the average muslim, a bad thing, just causes people to think that all muslims are fundamentalists.

I am a vegitarian, but do not force my opinion on others, hell I feed my cat chicken!

PETA would want me and my cat put down!

However my basic premise still stands, there are millions of well tasty dishes that you can indulge in, without having to force feed a bird.

To deliberatly inflict needless pain on any creature is wrong, to do this over a period of time, so some rich bastard can enjoy a few seconds of pleasure is totally wrong !

I can't see restaurants being force to close as a result of this, life will go on, the fat cat's will find some other expensive dish, and enjoy their illegal cuban cigar and port afterwards :-)

trying to get around the ban of the sale by foie gras by giving it away for “free” along with, say, a markedly overpriced $20 plate of lentils or $40 glass of wine.

There you have it. Just like Daremo said, if you don't strike at the root of the problem you're not getting anywhere. This is simply more feel good legislation to give lawyers and politicians something to do and to give PETA a "win" in their record book.

By the way, I've never heard of foie gras before today. How is it pronounced?

Just because you're a pedant, that doesn't mean you have to be pedantic about it

Pedantic note: you forgot to put a full stop at the end of your sentence! :p

Sorry D, I can be a bit anal about these things!
