View Full Version : Killing in Self Defence

If somone came up to you screaming "I'm going to kill you!!" and placed a knife near your throat and began cutting your main artery and you had no other choice but to retaliate, would you say that if you kill him (or her), that would be OK as it was purely self defence?
I mean, look at this way, someone IS going to kill YOU and it's either kill them or be killed. What would you do? Could you take a human life and carry on living knowing that if you didn't kill them they would definately have killed you? or would you rather die than harm another human being?
It all comes down to personal ethics and beliefs IMO, but it will be really interesting to hear other peoples views on such a delicate matter.
Let me know...

It's a no brainer cra58cker, you kill him/her and that's pretty much it!
If they did'nt attempt to kill you they would still be alive , so they really killed themselves , using you as a proxy :-)

I wouldn't wait for the nutcase to get that close to be able to put the knife to my throat. I'd kill him before he ever got anywhere near me.

Heh, good views but I think your both missing the point or maybe I didn't put my point across that well.
OK - So, lets say you killed this "nutcase" and the Police catch you and throw you in jail, do you think that YOU should be treated like a criminal? Would you say it's fair for you to be punished?
See where I'm going with this?
Keep the comments comming...

Ahhhh I see your point. Let me give you an example that happened here in the U.S.:
A group of gang-bangers who like doing drive-bys were wanted in California so they went to the neighboring state of Arizona. There the amused themselves by shooting at cars on the freeway. The seriously injured a pregnant woman.
They weren't quite so lucky on their choice of their next victim. You see Arizona has relaxed gun carry laws and concealed weapon permits. The 'gangstas' popped a cap at aome good old boy rancher and his wife. They fired two rounds from a 9mm at them and broke his windshield. He pulled out a .44 magnum and his blushing bride had a .357. They unloaded both weapons on the unlucky latinos and when the smoke cleared it was Rancher 4 - Gangstas 0. The rancher and his wife had killed them all.
The police of course came, questioned the rancher and his wife and confiscated their weapons and released them. They were called to court soon after where the judge ruled that the killings were justifiable homocide in self defense and the weapons were returned to the rancher. In other words the judge said that them varments 'needed killin'
Even though some may slam the U.S. for having guns, we usually don't penalize someone for pestacide.

Actually most people in the U.S. do not own a gun. This is just a misperception. Probably fostered by movies. Granted we have more than in Europe, but far lesss than in South America, the Middle East and parts of Africa.

I've made that decision before if its either going to me or someone else. I chose myself. I would have no hesitation. Its not wrong, its your life. Instincts drive you when you pull that trigger, afterwards your like damn..did that really happen? But as your doing it, its basically like a video game.

I don't consider myself to be bloodthirsty or particularly violent, but if I felt threatened - or I felt my family was threatened - I would definitely pull the trigger. While I would expect my actions to be thoroughly investigated, in the end I would also expect to be exonerated. Nor do I believe I would feel guilty. In a life or death choice between me and "them" I'll pick me every time.
