View Full Version : Rikku Takes Up Target Shooting!

OK so the air rifle got me hooked on shooting, but I needed more, and its too dark after work for me to go out...so today I went over to the local rifle club to see what goes on down there...what can I say...fantastic! Loved every minute!

I didnt do half bad either...my first go with a real gun (rather than air) I hit 3 bulls in my first 5-6 shots! (1 on the practice target, 2 on the sheet) After that I was going a bit blurry eyed, not used to iron sights (I usually use telescopic) i was hitting 6's and 7's...one shot even totally missed the black and I got 0...but hell 1 miss in 15 shots on my first go aint half bad!...So yeah, Im totally hooked, Ill be going back more and more!...

Rikku seems to be a closet American.....How intersting. Yup -- gonna get that gun rack for his van -- carrya concealed piece in his shorts and all sorts of American, violent activities.

BTW - I will not give my opinion on telescopic sights

Well I heard this was intentional -- You see until the legislature here approves greater health care benefits for senior citizens then the government must take harsh measures when dealing with the elderly.

Or maybe the guy made a comment about Cheney's daughter (she's gay)

or perhaps he made a bet with Wayne Gretzky's wife?

Or maybe he just can't shoot worth shit

And why not pray tell? You don't expect everyone to use iron sights forever do you? LOL.

I'm looking at cheapo air rifles at the moment. I wanna take the boy out rabbit shooting. A neccessary part of growing up methinks. You know, seeing the cycle of life for yourself etc.

I think that if you are going to eat meat, you should go out, kill something, skin/ gut it, cook it and eat it at least once in your lifetime. People seem so detached from the food chain these days. You ask a kid where chicken comes from and half the time they think it comes in a little plastic tray from the supermarket. Not my kids!

Well, it DOES come in a little plastic tray from the supermarket- at least mine does. Where it was before that is another story. As a young child I was on an excursion to a slaughter house to pick up Sunday's dinner. The chicken escaped the hands of the butcher and flapped around my face, headless, blood and chicken scratching feet everywhere on my face. Needless to say, I prefer the little plastic trays.

Daremo
16th February 2006, 10:40
Why - yes... It's a nice little rifle. Once they re-work the rifle in Quantico it's a new beast entirely. Floating stock - all sorts of mods. They turn a good rifle into a really nice one.

Ooooo, they even do a titanium version (http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_titanium.asp). Very nice.

Of course, if you're not a very good shot, you could use this little baby (http://www.lunch-break.co.uk/manager/pics/big_gun.jpg) I picked up for 2 packs of Marlboro while touring Russia.

@ Daremo: You still haven't explained your telescopic sights comment. Is it that you've used sights so powerful they could spot an ant from the moon and now any "consumer" sights just don't compete? Just a theory!

I with you all the way there.. people really have a problem with how the food got there and yet they still eat it.. seems like a recipie for trouble if you ask me.. I dont like guns so much but I agree.. you got to know about the killing and the cleaning and the cooking if you are going to understand what you are eating..

@Rikku....

25 yards? 25 YARDS?? TWENTY-FIVE YARDS????

Holy Shit, Rikku, can you see that far? - No wonder you need telescopic sights. My Gawd -- I could hit the bullseye with a fucking rock.

As to iron sights on the BArrett....Yes, iron sights up to about 1000 yards. The Barrett has a less than 1 MoA with match-grade ammo and performing a kill-shot at that range with iron sights is an absolute certainty on a stationary target.

@Frontdesk

There was no knee in the back -- I was still sitting on the sofa holding your wrist while your nose was vacuuming my carpet. But I do excuse your confusion due to your altered mental state. And BTW -- The phrase I used was: "As long as you lay still it won't hurt".

So anyway whats the deal with iron sights wen telescopic sights make life so much easier?

Daremo
23rd February 2006, 10:12
Very basically, telescopic sight have 2 pitfalls....

* They are not reliable in a combat situation. They are fragile and prone to being 'bumped' out of alignment.

* They become a 'crutch' and can cause a shooter to develop bad habits or a dependency on the telescopic sight.

Either one of these can make you very dead very fast

Rikku
23rd February 2006, 10:18
Luckily, im not in a combat situation...only against gulls and pigeons...so unless I can get killed by either of these birds I should be allright no?

Daremo
23rd February 2006, 10:44
You will not be 'alright'. If all you want to do is to pretend to shoot and just throw a little lead downrange, then you're fine. If you actually and truly want to learn to shoot then your education goes much deeper.

You must learn proper sight alignment and sight picture with iron sights. You must learn to zero your sights and learn to adjust your sights on-the-fly to obtain optimal results under adverse conditions. You must learn how to obtain and maintain a good stock weld. How to ride the shot to the next target. Target assessment and acquisition. How to adjust the sling and use the sling to stabilize your shot. And a million and one other things required to actually be proficient.

However, as I said, if you just want to PRETEND to shoot and throw lead for only 25 yards, well.....

Rikku
23rd February 2006, 11:26
Well seens as I am not in America I cannot own my own gun...so the only place I can shoot at all is the local 25 yard range, so I have no choice really...in about 3 months, providing I keep going to the local club every week, I can apply for an FAC...to get this though I need to have a proper cabinet that is bolted to the floor and a wall in a hidden place, this has to be inspected by the police...then, i can get my own gun...but then there is the small problem of having nowhere to legally go shooting...so really im stuck with my little toy air rifle...

TreeFrog
23rd February 2006, 12:58
@Daremo.. Take it easy on the kid. "PRETEND." ! Come on.!
Admitted.. a small indoor range is not quite the full scope of the shooting you seem to be more kin to. Yes there is much to learn outside a range like that and more in other contexts too.
However like driving a car on a city street is not the same as driving a rally car on a dirt road, it is still driving and still has plenty of responcability and scope for someone new to the field to apply themselvs, learn much and feel satisfied with positive results. That is a very healthy thing for anyone to put themselvs through on their own initative.

@Rikku.. Pay no heed to him dude. Hi is only seeing it from his (some might say over experenced) perspective. There is a cirtain zen aspect to shooting and as Daremo says a heck of a lot to learn. This is compunded by the fact that that you are handeling a weapon. You have to come to terms with it and understand it.
Juat keep it away form me and make sure you clean and eat everything you kill when come to Ireland and you'll be ok by me.

Thanks TreeFrog...Daremo does have a point, and I respect that...but a kid has gotta start somewhere...I'm just gonna keep on hunting pigeons with my air rifle and going shooting at the local range...every little helps...I think...

Daremo
23rd February 2006, 13:57
Don't get me wrong -- I'm trying to goad Rikku into going further. I think it's great that he's trying, especially in a society that is so anal about guns.

Here's my real thoughts Rikku -- Get rid of the damn telescopic sites and learn how to really use a rifle. Granted you're limited to 25 yards. To compensate try using your air rifle and iron sights at 25 yards instead of the .22. You see the air rifle at 25 yards takes more skill than the .22. The .22 with iron sights takes more skill than the telescopic sights.

The air rifle at 25 yards is equivielnt to the .22 at about 75 to 100 yards. Of course that depends upon the load you're shooting. Shorts, longs or long rifle cartridges all have a different ballistic qualities.

The idea is to actually LEARN HOW to shoot properly. Not just pushing lead downrange. You must build skill and knowledge. To do that you start at the very bottom with the absolute basics. A telescopic sight is only AFTER you've properly learned to fire, disassemble, clean and reassemble your weapon. At 25 yards with your air rifle you should easily be doing better than a 2-inch group of 5 shots. The same with a .22 at 75-100 yards.

To some extent this requires a quality weapon. You can't expect to do this, as a beginner, with mis-aligned sights, a lead-fouled barrel or a weapon that has been damaged by improper cleaning and has had the rifling at the tip of the barrel damaged by the cleaning rod.

I wish that I could be there to instruct you properly.

Kitz E Kat
23rd February 2006, 14:14
Or to put it another way, you don't want to be a skiddie with your telescopic sight's do ya !
As with anything the best way to learn is the hard way, using the least tool's available to you, then having mastered them, learn how to use the frilly bit's.
You will be able to better use them, and understand what exactly they do.

When you can shoot the eye out of a newt, with iron sight's in the dark, then move on :-)

Just my 2 cent's !

Rikku
24th February 2006, 01:54
Ok, so when I get round to buying a new gun what do I get? My air rifle doesnt seem to allow for iron sights...so do I buy a new air rifle, I like the look of the Logun S16...or wait for my FAC and get a .22rimfire (im restricted to that ammo at the range) I like the look of a Ruger 10/22 in this field, its supposed to be easy to take apart and clean...but then theres no iron sights as standard on that...so I have no idea what to get...

24th February 2006, 03:16
I used to love my catapolt.
Used to have as much fun finding things I could use as shot as actually using the thing. Got quite good at it too, if I do say so myself.
It had the result of building up some serious arm and sholder mussel. This ment I had a much better sholder to rest a stock on and more confidence with general holding of a gun.

The archery was something similar but I didn't use a gun much at that time so I never got to see how it impacted on gun handeling. Cant have had any negative results though. Judo was another one I found interesting.. I didn't think about it untill much later but it seemed to have had an impact on gun handeling.
I'm no ace shot and I dont like guns so much now but I did enjoy it at the time.

Surfice to say simple tools are fun and absolutly nothign is ever wasted.

I have heard that a shotgun with a shell of salt has a most amazing result. Not a lot of skill involved I suppose . except that of avoiding shooting your own foot. Though it could be honed in to a fine art too I'm sure..

Yeah thread hijackin is good :-)

Sure the IRA did scrap all their arm's and shit, or so they said!
But a nail studded baseball bat can do damage , they still have fear on their side, nobody would get into an argument with a member.
They still posses the menace that they had, nothing changed there.

Really, the IRA are a criminal gang with a cause, it's kinda hard to get that across to people outside of Ireland, in particular Irish American's think that these dude's are freedom fighters.
These dude's deal in drug's , run protection racket's , and are just ordinary criminal's, nothin more , nothing less.
Would you respect a gang that killed a mother that helped out a dying soldier, dumped her body never to be found, her crime, the dying soldier was Brittish, had she left the poor bastard to die without comfort she would still be alive, she just did what any human would do......

These fucker's are cold killer's, I can't see the glory in all that ......

Using myself as an example, I would agree the IRA is glorified with Irish Americans. However, Americans have a long history of glorifying villians. Bonnie and Clyde, Billie the Kid, Al Capone, we even make up gansters to glorify, The Sopranos!

We're a sick lot to be sure.

Like every institution or group or gang or system.. they start out with possibly the best intentions but systems all stand to feed themselves.
There is no such thing as a gang or group that wants to stop its existence.
There is no such thing as a group or movement that wants to succeed to the point that they are no longer needed.
And if they are no longer needed.... well they are still there...
That is not to say I dont agree with the idea of what is in many ways an obvious objective. Just not the fear and the killing that they use.

The odd thing about the Rioting is that the people who came from the north to the march... there were a good number there... well the Irish constitution includes the North of Ireland as part of the country so they are constitutionally included in the right to request to, and then have a march for almost anything in "Their Capital City". The fools that stopped them do not see that by letting them march is far more Nationalistic than stopping them. !!
If the objective were to be achieved then the people there, regardless of race, religion, colour or creed would have to be accommodated.. that is what including means. lol

Oh and the guys who threw the rocks.. well they need to take up target practice..

@Radical Ed

Dude, How can you use Cuban Ak-47's? They are absolutely the pits. Just chambering a round will leave the impression of the firing pin on the primer of the round. That weapon has a defect where it can run wild and just blow out a whole clip. Additionally it can blow back the whole reciever into your right eyeball.

It's a disaster waiting to happen. Hell, the Cuban AK is as dangerous to the shooter as to the target.

Even the Indian AK clones are better than the Cuban model.

@Rikku

I think what Ed is saying is that I would have no problem living wherever Ed lives because they understand that I would kill any asshole who gave me grief, but that Ed's neighbors would bend you over and make you squeal like a pig.

@Radical Ed

Thanks, Ed, but I already have a nice AK47 - the good one with the switchblade bayonet. I got it off of a Russian 'advisor' in VietNam -- he was done using it.

Rikku

No shit?!?! I want one man!

Daremo

Those are quite illegal in the UK and most places in the EU. Mine is legal here because it was imported before the ban on assault weapons and I have a valid FFL (Federal Firearms License).

The normal US citizen today can no longer purchase such a weapon legally. However there are people like Ed over here that provide goods and servoces for a price.

Rikku
2nd March 2006, 09:49
But how do we know Ed is in the US? ;)

Daremo
2nd March 2006, 10:02
We don't, and in fact he may very well not be in the US. I was just saying that most western nations have outlawed such weapons with certain caveats and 'grandfathering' of pre-existant weapons.

I was also saying that in the US we have "Ed's" also who provide illegal arms and other services -- I wasn't implying that Ed lived in the US.

But a "slapper" over here is, a loose woman, usually from inner city.
