First off, West Hollywood is a very small city, but it encompasses the high fashion district and 45% of the fashion retailers located there sell items with fur.

There is a glaring exemption in the ban - furniture stores may still sell furniture with leather and/or fur. So, you can't have a tiny bit of fur on your collar, but you CAN have a whole suite of furniture made from leather covered in whatever fur you happen to like.

Here's the link to the whole story: http://news.yahoo.com/west-hollywood-sets-trend-banning-fur-sales-182000621.html;_ylt=AsMn.UX5hCq6mxJNpBdHCxms0NUE;_ ylu=X3oDMTNtYjB2M2s3BG1pdANUb3BTdG9yeSBGUARwa2cDNT NhMmU0ZjYtMjMxZC0zMmI4LWE2YjgtODcyMTAwOTRiN2IzBHBv cwMxMwRzZWMDdG9wX3N0b3J5BHZlcgMxODJkOTk1MC1lNTU0LT ExZTAtOGYxZi0wYjBkMGYxNTk1ZGE-;_ylg=X3oDMTFvdnRqYzJoBGludGwDdXMEbGFuZwNlbi11cwRw c3RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANob21lBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25zBHRlc3QD;_ ylv=3

It will be interesting to see the result of the financial impact study, as the ban hangs on the outcome of that.
My guess is that it will be somewhat negligible. While 45% of stores may sell fur, exactly what quantity is a whole different matter...

People get so stupid about causes. Ban on fur? Pretty soon, they'll be marching in the streets to promote soylent green.

It amuses the hell out of me that the city council banned selling fur on clothing to protect animals but allows fur and leather on furniture. What, exactly, was their thought process? Did they have a thought process? Did they happen to think about the number of animals it takes to produce leather sofas, chairs and even bed headboards? What about leather bound books? Did they also ban leather shoes, purses and wallets? Of course not - they were busy trying to look progressive but wound up looking foolish instead.

Well I guess that if you ban leather you will save the life of not one cow: the cow is still going to meet his maker as he is mainly killed for meat. Leather is a by-product of that industry. So banning leather makes no difference to the population of cows.
Mink sandwiches or burgers are not all that popular over here, so banning mink - for example - would end mink farming as they are used for nothing else except their fur.
That would be the logic I would think...

But since this is West Hollywood, where excesses of all kinds can be found, it's not just cow leather being used. There's alligator and ostrich hide as well as mink and ermine fur to be found on the furniture. I believe West Hollywood also banned the sale of veal years ago, but calf leather is allowed on furniture as well.
